How to have a successful buying experience

Living in the rainy Lower Mainland requires proper working windshield wipers for your car. A few months ago, I had to replace mine. I made a quick trip to my local Canadian Tire. There they handed me a giant book in which I looked up the make, model and year of my car. It told me the exact size I needed and the brands that had that size. From there I was able to choose the best ones in my budget, and I was on my way. Sounds simple, right? Now imagine you need to by windshield wipers, but don’t know what year your car is. Maybe you don’t even know what type of car it is. Sure, you can buy ones that look right in the store, but there is a very good chance they won’t fit on your car when you get home.

So what does buying windshield wipers have to do with light fixture shopping? Trying to buy a light without having a good understanding of your space and needs is like trying to buy wipers blindly. There will be a lot of frustration unless you do your homework and come prepared. Here are some tips to help you not only have a successful shopping trip, but also enjoy the process.

Know your space

Whether you are replacing a bathroom vanity fixture, or buying all the lights for a new home, you need to come armed with a clear understanding of your space. What are the dimensions of your bathroom? Does it have any natural or secondary light sources? Do you shave or do makeup on that bathroom? What type of mirror do you have? By coming armed with these answers, we will be able to avoid you going home with a fixture that only lights half of your bathroom.

how-to-2

If you’re picking out all the lights for a new build, make sure you know what you need. At the very least, arrive with a shopping list of all the fixtures you need. Even better, come with your building plans and electrical drawings. We will sit down with you, go over everything room by room and help you decide what would work best for your space. If you don’t feel comfortable working off plans, we offer onsite consultations, which you can book here. By visiting your house, one of our experts would be able to have a deeper understanding of the space, and confidently make recommendations.

Know your budget

The world of lighting is vast and large. Like any commodity, the price range for a chandelier can be anywhere from $100 to $30,000+. If you know how much you want to spend, and are open and honest with us, we can find something that will fit into almost all budgets.

Know your timeline

With over ten thousand fixtures on display, unfortunately we are unable to have multiples of each in stock at all times. Also, most higher-end fixtures are made to order. We recommend placing your lighting order a minimum of 4-6 weeks prior to needing them for installation. This avoids the panic of getting everything in on time, and eliminates the need for multiple visits from your electrician.

Arrive with an open mind

We love it when our customers arrive with an idea in their minds as to what they are looking for. However, don’t be afraid the think outside the box. Our lighting experts are on top of the latest technology and trends, and may have an idea that you would never have thought of. Arrive with an open mind, and trust us. In doing so, we can create something that is truly magical.

When building a new home or doing renovations, lighting tends to be placed low on the priority list. However, by planning ahead and coming armed with knowledge of your space and budget, the process will become a lot more streamlined, and hopefully even enjoyable.
