Ceiling fans have come a long way and are no longer the eye-sore or perceived safety concern that they once were years ago. Today’s ceiling fans provide a quiet, efficient way to keep the air moving in virtually any room. There are multiple styles to complement any decor as well: Modern, Industrial, Commercial, Rustic, Coastal, Contemporary, Bohemian, Tropical and - that trusted standby - Traditional.

Our team is often asked what ceiling fan is right for a room. What size? How many blades? How to work with a sloped ceiling? This guide will help to determine which ceiling fan is best suited to fit your space.

How Do I Determine The Correct Size?

Sizing the fan correctly will ensure maximum airflow without delivering too much that a noticeable draft is induced in the room. An incorrectly sized fan will not move air properly, causing noise, "wobbles" or vibrations in the ceiling.

Since the volume of air in a room is a function of the size of the room, we can base the size of the fan on the size of the room.

For 90sq feet or less
Blade sweep is 15-42"
For 90-100sq feet
Blade sweep is 44-48"
For 100-150sq feet
Blade sweep is 50-54"
For 150+ sq feet
Blade sweep is 56-96"

Where Should A Ceiling Fan Hang?

Ceiling fans should be centered in the room and the blade tips should be a minimum of 18” away from any wall. If the fan is not centered, the air will not move symmetrically over the blades and your fan is at risk to have a "wobble" effect, with associated noise and vibrations.

Maintain at least 7ft of clearance under the fan blades. For a standard 8ft ceiling, you ideally will look for a hugger-style fan that mounts as though it is "hugging" the ceiling. For higher ceilings the mounting height can be adjusted for aesthetics, provided the minimum clearance is met.

Where ceiling height allows, install the fan 8 to 9 feet above the floor for optimal airflow. Avoid mounting a ceiling fan too high. The fan will have to work harder to push the air down and the efficiency of the fan will be seriously compromised.

For sloped ceilings, purchase a sloped ceiling kit specifically for your fan. Plan your fan location and height carefully to ensure that there is proper clearance from the blades of your fan to the sloped ceilings.
